Richard II

Above all there is Shakespeare’s ineffable poetry, enlivened by the skilled actors’ facility with the language. Shakespeare stays relevant through his poetry and his uniquely deep plumbing of human nature in all its facets. He doesn’t need us to point out relevancies of his stories to current events. That said, “The king is not himself, but basely led by flatterers.” Remind you of anyone?

Their depiction of the moral ambiguities surrounding political power and those who wield it speak remarkably well to a contemporary American audience. As the production so aptly shows, moral rectitude does not reside clearly with one or side or the other, even when one of those sides is supposed to possess divine right, but rather somewhere in the murky middle.
